Gallery of the Statues
Galleria delle Statue
During the Medici period, this central gallery was a part of the grand loggia opened by Bartolomeo Ammannati onto the Boboli Garden. During the prime Lorrenese period (1737-1799), the loggia was closed and became The Guards' Room.
In 1790, it was decorated by Giuseppe Maria Terreni (1739-1811) and transformed into the Gallery of Statues "Galleria delle Statue". It held the collection of ten ancient, marble statues brought from Rome in 1795 as part of the collection of Cardinal Ferdinando de'Medici, as well as the busts of grand dukes Leopoldo and Ferdinando III over the doors. In the 19th century, the statues were integrated into the collection of 14 busts that were displayed in the Room of the Niches "Sala delle Nicchie" next door.
