The Small Grotto
Grotticina
Adjacent to Lorenzo's Room is the Grotticina, which earlier acted as an antechamber for the grand duchess. It was covered in shells, like Buontalenti's Grotto in the Boboli. Now a 17th century fountain remains on the right wall decorated with putti. It is the work of the Florentine Andrea Peruzzi. It now houses a collection of frames recently uncovered in the Pitti's depository. Above, on the wall on the left, is a beautiful intaglio by the Englishman, Grinling Gibbons, alluding to peace between England and Tuscany. It was a gift to Cosimo III from Charles II of England in 1682.
