The Southern Palace
La Palazzina Meridionale
The elegant Palazzina Meridionale was created by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo as new quarters for the grand ducal family. He entrusted the design and construction of this new wing of the palace to Gaspare Maria Paoletti, who began work in 1776. It was completed about a half century later by Pasquale Poccianti. Comfortable and secluded, it was the domestic residence of choice for all the reigning families that followed, including during the French interregnum. The frescoed ceilings constitute an important document in the history of Romanticism in Tuscany, while other rooms along the facade retain their neo-classical decoration.
