The Psyche Room
Sala di Psiche
This room during the Medici period was a part of Cardinal Giovan Carlo's apartment and was called the "Camerino d'Inverno". This part of the palace was profoundly modified during the reign of both the Bourbons and the Lorenese.
The new decorations were accomplished by a group of modern Neoclassical painters. The ceiling, depicting Psyche being transported by Love to Olympus, was painted by Giuseppe Collignon (1778-1863) after 1815.
The room contains the work of the Neapolitan painter Salvatore Rosa (Naples, 1615- Rome 1673) who traveled to Florence in the service of the Medici and other Florentine families between 1640 and 1649. There are twelve works by this painter in the Medici and Lorenese collections.
