The Education of Jove Room
Sala dell'Educazione di Giove
During the Medici times this was the grand duke's secretary's room.
During the reign of Elisa Baciocchi early in the ninetenth century, this room was to be included in the private apartment of the emperor, Napoleon.
With the return of the Lorenese in 1815, this room, like all the others in this section that had been part of the apartments of the grand duke under the Medici, became a part of the Palatine Gallery.
The pictures on the ceiling were painted in 1819 by Luigi Catani, representing the young Jove evading his father, Saturn, who devoured his children because of a prophecy that his children would dispossess him.
The child, hidden by his mother, Rea on the island of Crete, was raised by the nymph Adrastéa and nursed by the goat Amaltéa, while a group of Corybants played the cymbals to cover up the sound of crying. In the hexagons are Cybel, Neptune, Aphrodite, Juno and Mars.
