The White Room
Sala Bianca
The brothers Grato and Giocondo Albertolli, artisans from Lugano, worked from 1774 to 1776 on the White room. They had previously worked at the Uffizi and at the Villa del Poggio Imperial, and continued to work there while working at the Pitti. They transformed the original "Salone dei Forestieri" ("Salon for Visitors") into the new "Salone dei Stucchi" ("the Stuccoed Salon"), or Sala Bianca: the old wall coverings and baroque decoration were removed and replaced by the white luminosity of a new, elegant architectural framework, decorated in delicate pastels -- pink, green, and ochre -- that have only recently come to light in the most recent restoration.
