The Allegories Room
Sala delle Allegorie
This room during the 17th century was the bedroom for the grand duchess's apartment. It is the only room in this wing of the palace (today called the Volteranno Wing "Quartiere Volteranno") that maintains the ceiling decoration from the 16th century, with stucco and frescoes as well. The other rooms of this apartment were profoundly modified and renovated at the beginning of the 19th century.
The ceiling is decorated with a rich combination of stuccoes, gold vegetable elements, and figures of putti, directly inspired by designs by Pietro da Cortona for the rooms of the Planets (the Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus Rooms in the Palatine Gallery). They were perhaps executed by the same Roman manufacturer. The five wall panels were frescoed around 1658 by Baldassarre Franceschini, called "il Volteranno", who was employed by the Grand Duchess Vittoria delle Rovere. The allegorical figures in the frescoes framed in the ceiling, from which the room derives its name, allude to the name and moral quality of the grand duchess. In the center, Fame, Strength, and Victory (Vittoria) are represented, while the entry wall shows Modesty, Peace, Truth, and Wisdom.
