The Volterrano Wing
The rooms of the Volteranno Wing were the private apartments of the Grand Duchesses from the time of Cosimo II until the death here of the last of the family, Anna Maria Luisa, in 1743. Cardinal Giovan Carlo, Ferdinando II's brother, kept rooms on the ground floor of the north wing but also had a few rooms at the far end of the wing on the piano nobile.
Around 1658, Baldassarre Franceschini (detto Volterrano) decorated the ceiling of the Allegories Room for Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere. Thereafter, the entire wing popularly took his name. The subject of the central panel in the Allegory Room ceiling is Fame, Strength, and Victory. The other four panels allude to other moral qualities.
