The Cardinals' Quarters
Quartiere dei Cardinali e Forestieri
This set of rooms is entered first through the large Sala di Bona that was commissioned by Ferdinando I to celebrate his recent victories. The room is decorated with frescoes by Bernardino Poccetti, completed between 1608 and 1609, depicting on one wall Stories of the War Against the Turks. One particular victory, shown in The Conquest of the City of Bona, gives its name to the room.
Ferdinando I may originally have intended these rooms for women of the Medici family, but these apartments were quickly converted into quarters for high-ranking guests. Hence, this part of the palace came to be called the Quartiere dei Cardinali e Forestieri ", "the Cardinals' and Foreign Princes' Quarters."
